The Crawling Trap (Umbra) is a trap and hostile NPC in Piggy that was designed by Axel_Glow. It came out with the Docks - Chapter 9 update along with Markus, and it requires a hunt to obtain. It is also the secondary bot in the first phase of Lab - Chapter 12, with a similar mechanic to Mousy. It's in the thumbnail for the Tag gamemode, and is what the players will turn into during the gameplay of Tag (except if they equip the Mousy skin).

Appearance[]

Most of the trap's features are alike to the Friend bot in Port - Chapter 7. Its eyes are neon and it has neon white claws. It has cylindrical ears, with one ear that appears to be melting. Finally, it has a black pig snout instead of a completely round face. It is obtainable while Friend is not. It looks similar to the Sentinel.

Actions[]

Once spawned, it will chase the nearest player and is able to go into vents. Once they confront a player, they will make the player fall over and hold them over their back with one hand. The trap will then travel to Piggy while dragging the player with them. The trap will disappear after dragging the player for 5 seconds.

Obtainability[]

Play Docks - Chapter 9. You need to use the green key, red key, dynamite, and candle. You must have the candle in your inventory and click on 5 Insolence eyes found on the map. Their locations are:

  • Near the ship behind one of the benches on the bottom.
  • On a side of a bench after you used the dynamite, on the bottom stairs.
  • Near the maze where you need to use the candle on a wall.
  • In the maze after you use the candle, it's usually close to the right entrance.
  • On the right of the bench where the dynamite can sometimes spawn, in the right green key room.

Once you have clicked all the eyes, the Crawling Trap will start chasing you. Lead the trap to the open coffin with a note that now says "SOON". The coffin should close and you will hear the cha-ching sound, meaning that you obtained the trap. You don't need to escape to obtain it, but you do need to rejoin after, or else you won't see it in your inventory.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If a player gets killed by the Crawling Trap while doing the quest to obtain it, it will de-spawn and you will have to start the quest for it all over again.

Trivia[]

  • The Crawling Trap's name is "Umbra", revealed through a tweet by Night_foxx.[1] Interestingly, "Umbra" means "shadow" in Latin. This is most likely a reference to the black material they are made out of.
  • This trap is officially canon, as it appears as a secondary bot in Lab patrolling the vents.
    • It is the first canon trap in Piggy not to be placed by the main bot of the chapter, with the second being the Insolence Trap.
  • This trap lacks an idle or stunned animation so if the trap is shot, the trap will freeze with the walking animation looping in place.
  • This trap was highly suggested by the community as it deals with "vent campers", or people who stay in vents so that Piggy can't get them.
  • This, the Mouse Trap, and, to an extent, the Tombstone Trap, are the only traps that can move from where Piggy places it.
  • This is the third character to crawl. The first is Mousy and the second is Friend.
  • Due to the presence of long vents in House, Lab and Mall, this trap will be most beneficial in those maps.
  • The Crawling Trap has a unique feature whilst moving, where it leaves a black substance (or trail) behind it.
  • The Crawling Trap bot in Docks can infect you when playing on Infection.
    • This was also later added to the lab version, though infected players can get stuck in the vent.
  • The Crawling Trap is the first trap to bring players to the Piggy.
  • This is currently the first and only trap to have appeared in a game thumbnail.
  • It uses the same jumpscare sound as Friend.
  • It is the first trap with a mouth.
  • The AI for this trap used to be completely broken in Build Mode; it did not move.
    • This has since been fixed.
  • There is a bug that when this trap catches the player, the Piggy may be able to kill the player multiple times.
  • There used to be a bug where on Traitor mode if the traitor released a crawling trap, it would grab the traitor themselves and bring them to the bot.
  • There is an UGC item based on this trap; the Piggy Got You back accessory uploaded by Night_foxx.
  • Sometimes, players in Docks can get confused putting out a Crawling Trap generated by an infected player in the coffin instead of the bot.
    • This used to actually work and give players the trap.
  • There is a glitch where it will not appear in your inventory after performing the tasks.
    • However, all you need to do to fix it is rejoin.
  • It appears in the Tag thumbnail, as well as being used in the actual mode (except if a player equips Mousy).
  • There was a bug where if someone was caught by this trap, they would be considered "eliminated" from the game.
    • If the crawling trap grabbed the last remaining survivor in the map, the timer would say "Game Over" and the game would end after catching the player.
      • This was added with the release of tag.
      • This bug did not occur in Build Mode.
    • As of the 6/16/2024 update, this has been fixed.
  • If you activate the Dreidel Event in Build Mode, there is a 25% chance of a crawling trap spawning in the map.
  • Previously, if you got caught by one, you would float slightly off the ground. The more you got caught, the higher you would float.
  • The bot version in Lab originally had a really small hitbox and had large issues killing players, but it was later fixed.
  • The trap can still catch you when it is stunned. If it does, it will start moving again so it can bring you to the Piggy.
  • According to Axel_Glow, he would describe the material Umbra is made out of as more similar to oil than ink, despite many people calling it ink.[2]
  • Despite being added to the game before the Sentinels, Umbra is a repurposed Sentinel model from a time when it was unknown whether the Sentinels will end up being used in the game or not.[3]
  • Sometimes in Build Mode, the trap will kill players after letting them go.
  • If a player is being grabbed by a crawling trap and is grabbed by The Hand, then the hand will lift both of them up into the air and teleport them both.
  • If two of this same trap grab the same survivor at the same time, one will function normally, while the other will simply be stuck in place with the animation it uses when dragging a survivor for the rest of the game or if it despawns due to running out of energy if it was placed by a player infected.
  • They are unable to go up wedges, concave corners, and stairs in build mode.
  • If a crawling trap falls into the void, the player infected who spawned it will be unable to use any more traps or abilities until they rejoin the game.
    • This most often happens with Blatt, due to its body being off of the ground and pushing the trap through the ground.
  • The crawling trap in Lab is able to exit the long vent, this is likely unintentional.
