Infection is a gamemode in Piggy, created to celebrate 500,000,000 visits. It works similarly to Player, but when the infected player kills someone, it instead turns the caught player into another infected player. None of the infected players have traps.
Mechanic[]
Normal[]
This mode plays out like the Player gamemode. However, when the selected player kills a survivor, that survivor will instantly respawn as an infected player. They must work together and turn all survivors to win the round. Another special feature of this gamemode is that the infected doesn't have traps. Most secondary bots can infect players in this mode by killing them, but some like Mr. P can’t. Any map hazard deaths will not infect players.
Decay[]
This mode is featured in Decay where it functions differently than its main game form. A player is set to be an infected, and can swap between select points to choose where they spawn after their brief spawn timer runs out. They will always be a Decaying Infected. These infected can crouch and instead of damaging on contact, they just click the screen to attack. They are also locked in first person. If a survivor dies from anything (Infected, Twisted Rabbit, or map hazards), they join the infected team. If a player is killed by another player, the chat will announce who killed who. The round ends if all players are infected or if a survivor escapes. Upon returning to the lobby, stats for the round will be displayed, showing all players in the round, how many infected each player killed, and how many players each player infected.
Regular infected bots still spawn in Infection, working as they would in regular Decay although killing them contributes to your kill count in the end results. While the bots scale in health based on server size, player infected scale based on remaining survivors.
Strategies[]
As a Survivor[]
- Make sure your teammates aren’t killed. Try distracting Piggy if you’re a more experienced player so the less experienced ones aren’t infected and become extra threats.
- If it feels necessary, bring these inexperienced players to map hazards/non-infecting secondary bots or bring non-infecting secondary bots to them. This is very niche and won’t often help as it eliminates possible distractions and map completion potential.
- Get as much done as you can while there’s only one infected player. Because they don’t have traps, the round is easier than Player until a survivor is infected.
- Take full advantage of Abilities, as they’re usually your best chance of surviving a horde.
- Try using vents to escape hordes. Remember that the infected may coordinate to block off vents, forcing normal escape.
- Avoid tight spaces unless necessary; a generally useful tip that especially comes into play in Infection. If a tight space is required to enter for map completion (Ex, the Tank Bullet room in Outpost), only enter it when all infected are stunned or far away.
- It is worth grabbing the gun/crossbow (provided one exists) and stocking up on as much ammo/carrots as possible. Not only to save yourself but others as well.
- This is especially important in the 100 Players game, as the amount of infected players grows very rapidly.
- You can also stock up items to give to a friendly NPC so they can stun any of the infected players.
As an infected[]
- If you are an infected, directly search the spawn for players or near of there first. There’s a chance you find at least one.
- Try capturing the laggy or AFK people first, as they tend to be slower than Piggy while not being entirely useless.
- Try to infect the people who aren't hiding first, and if there are no people in the vents, block the entrance.
- Like in a normal round of Piggy, if they manage to get away, take the nearest shortcut.
- As an infected, you don't have traps. However, you should try getting players stuck in an area where you and another infected can come from both sides and catch them.
- Try your best to coordinate with other infected to trap players. Even just two infected can easily block off areas or bamboozle players with tricky maneuvers.
Trivia[]
- Infection was originally planned to be removed after some time. However, due to popular demand the mode stayed.[1]
- A poll was put up by MiniToon in the Official Piggy Discord asking if people wanted Infection to be changed to make it so when you are shot by a gun/crossbow, you turn back into a survivor. Despite the majority of the community liking this idea, it was never added.[2]
- This is the second mode that can have a higher amount of infected than average, the first being Player + Bot, the third being Swarm and the fourth being Infection + Bot.
- Traitor and Infection switched places every other round. As of Tag's addition, Infection can be picked multiple times in a row, as the game will randomize the 4 extra gamemodes to pick which are Infection, Tag, Traitor and Swarm.
- It is possible to die in Infection, due to specific secondary bots that don't infect (Doggy, Foxy, Mousy, Soldier, Mr. P), lasers, acid, and fall damage.
- Umbra in Docks and Friend in Port can infect players.
- This game mode shows how the infection can spread, but only if you are an animal and not a human.
- Sketchy calls it "infect chin", most likely due to the fact that "chin" sounds like "tion".
- One of the greatest problems with this gamemode in particular is because some people will simply go to the Piggy Spawn, waiting to get infected to kill others.
- If this gamemode is tied with Player, it will most likely be chosen. But, if this mode is tied with Bot, then the Bot mode will win the vote. The same appeals to Traitor and Swarm.
- There is a green outline around the text on the voting icon.
- In the developing Chinese version of the game, Infection's name has been changed to "Turn" (likely because you are turning into an infected). This is due to video game regulations in China.
- The main reason Zompiggy is on the thumbnail for infection is most likely because she is a zombie, and zombies are usually associated with being "infected".
Glitches[]
- If an advanced bot (like Dakoda or Markus) kills you, instead of being infected, your screen turns black and stays that way for the remainder of the game, forcing you to rejoin.
- This still counts the bugged players as playing future rounds, but after the intro cutscene plays, they will be returned to the black screen and not actually be put into the map.
- This also causes the bot, after killing, to stop moving unless they are stunned. After that, they can't kill players.
- There was a bug in the gamemode which appeared to mistake the first Piggy for a bot, since that Piggy could walk through doors without opening them (Even though bots stop to open the doors, they don't collide with them which is why this happens.) and couldn't go through invisible walls only meant for bots (For example they can't go through the window in House or jump down the stairs in Outpost). Additionally, they could go through the few spots which the bots can go through but the infected players can't.
- If the last player is infected by someone using the ??? skin, they will stay in the map because of how long the jumpscare animation takes.
- If a player used the Torcher skin, everyone they infected stayed in the map after the game ends.
- If you leave while getting infected, your skin appears as an NPC.
- If done earlier, it will be the old Piggy design rather than your skin.
- There was a bug in where if you equipped Blatt in Book 1, then got infected in Book 2, the player that equipped Blatt would have their screen be black forever, and the player that infected them couldn't move.
- If the selected player leaves in Outpost, then the Bot won't infect players, but rather kill them.
- Dying because of something that isn't the player won't turn you into Piggy in most situations (with certain secondary bots like Grandmother and the Sentinels being able to infect); it will only send you to the menu.
