Plot[]
Continuing from the previous story, Ben and Ollie head into the lab while Billy and Badgy stay outside fighting the infected.
Ben and Ollie try to open a door to the lab but notice it won't open. Ollie notices a keypad on the side of the door. The keypad needs a four-digit code, so Ben puts in "1749" and types it in only for it to flash red. Ollie tells Ben there's five thousand possible combinations to the numbers for one of them to be right. Ben asks his friend how he knows it. Ollie tells Ben it's "basic binomial coefficient.". He asks Ben when the last time he had been to school only for Ben to remember his adventure with Sally. Ollie entered the right combination after a few minutes and the doors open.
Ben and Ollie follow a set of stairs heading underground in the lab. Ollie flips a lever allowing the lights to go on. The two decide to split up to find the man over the walkie-talkie. They both end up not finding much, however, Ben notices many notes and scattered papers in a room before meeting up with Ollie again. Just as the two deduce that the notes that Ben found were for a cure to the infection, an infected bear can be heard in the distance. Ollie runs off, leaving Ben to quickly pack the research, and pull out Officer Doggy's taser from his bag. As Ben catches up with Ollie and the bear, Billy and Badgy burst into the room, and assist Ben with its defeat. With all four of the survivors together, Ben shows Billy and Badgy the research notes he found. They suspect that they could be a map towards finding a cure and by using the notes, they would be able to locate one.
Now needing an exit, before the infected can attack, the group elects Billy to make a way out by force. They all empty out of the lab just in time, and barricade the infected in. Discussing the possibility of creating a cure using the newly found notes is interrupted by Willow on the walkie-talkie. She questions where the group has been, and wonders why they've been underground when Ben tells her the fact. In response to him telling her that "it's a long story", Willow expects "real answers" the next time she checks in, due to having to watch Badgy's siblings. The infected were now ready to break through the barricades, and the four returned to The Safe Place to regather their thoughts.
The next day rolls around, and after Ben brought the four to the school to gather supplies from its chemistry classroom, Willow angrily called them through the walkie-talkie again, still trying to understand what the four are hiding from her. Billy then revealed everything that the group went through yesterday and now with the school, leaving Willow to deem the mission a full Silver Paw matter, much to the quartet's dismay. Ben states that instead of Willow sending out agents to the locations, she should let Ben and the others find out where exactly the cure is. Willow begrudgingly agrees to this, and asks in the least what the next component to the cure is, that being Amygdalin (a chemical compound mostly found in fruit seeds).
Ben notes a grocery store on the Metro line that they can go to in order to find fruits, and once again, a horde of infected await them across a set of stairs in the metro. While in battle with the infected crowd, a train stops at the platform, and the four survivors are able to climb aboard and sleep in shifts, while the train takes them to their destination.
Arriving at the grocery store, and sneaking past the sleeping infected there, Ollie spots a load of apples through the store's windows. Unfortunately, an infected boar is seen sleeping atop the stack of fruits. To make matters worse, the doors chime when the four enter, causing another horde of infected boars to hunt after them. In order for Ben's plan to work, the four have to find a pair of red and green gears for the empty set that powers the store's security gates. Upon finding the gears and uncovering a white security key, the quartet are able to trap the boars behind the gates and venture in a somewhat peace. The four are able to fill a plastic bag to the brim with fresh apples, keeping the sleeping infected docile until Billy trips on a rotten apple, and drops his barbell. A group of infected, including the once sleeping individual, now chase the four. As Ben tries to leave with his friends, he spots a cardboard pack of batteries that he deems useful for Officer Doggy's taser. When attempting to run away with them, though, the infected claw at the plastic bag, which empties out all the collected apples into a pile that the infected group quickly devour.
Now with the evening turning into night, the survivors have fled to the forest that kept Ben and Officer Doggy safe long ago. When all hope seems lost, Ben begins to cry as he blames himself for losing the apples in the grocery store. The other three manage to cheer him up by revealing that the trees in the forest are actually apple trees filled with many different species of the fruit. Not only did they feast on the apples, they also made sure to keep the seeds in the beakers Ben had in Officer Doggy's bag. The former then pulls out the research documents from the lab, forming a map with drawings of blue mushrooms that made little sense to him. Badgy then remembers the location for the mushrooms being a temple in Doveport, a "sister-city" to Lucella across the North Sea.
The day after, the four trek to the Port of Lucella to find many abandoned ships riddled within the docks. After a brief encounter with an infected Moose in a boat that Ben initially had chosen, the group set off on a different vehicle that would eventually cross the North Sea and into the waters of Doveport.
The temple was far from where the group had docked their boat, and once they had made their way past its entrance and the traps the structure greets them with, Ollie points out an unfamiliar name engraved on the Temple walls: "Spidella". The four eventually make it to a handle-less door with a blue glow suspected to be where the blue mushrooms are located. Just before Ollie can figure out the wheel puzzle that's attached to the door, Spidella reveals herself to the four. As Ben tries to find the last piece of the puzzle's code, he is gashed in the stomach by Spidella and faints.
Ben opens his eyes again, and finds himself mysteriously in the school with Sally by his side. Ben seems to already know that this is a trick, and tries to drown out Sally's fake greetings, claiming she isn't real. A new voice emerges from the setting, and a tall entity materializes in front of the boy. At first seeming eerily inquisitive, he tells Ben that he is unique in the sense that he cannot be infected, noting how the latter was attacked in Lucella, yet remained alive. The mysterious entity claims that he can help Ben see his friends again, to which Ben immediately denies the offer. The entity, unfazed, let's him go, leaving Ben with the thought of regretting what he's just done.
Ben finally awakes in the real world, only to find out that the group solved the wheel puzzle, but Ollie was scratched by Spidella. Now having to be carried by Billy, the search for the final component to the cure was becoming desperate, as Ollie was succumbing to the infection at a rapid pace. The group's final location; Outpost Echo. Billy had smashed through the door of the outpost's lab when there wasn't time to solve the code, and as Ben tries to make a speech, he's cut off not by an infected, but by a militia commander. She has her men ready to deal with the group as two of them are seemingly infected, but Willow is still on the other end of the walkie-talkie Ben has. Willow attempts to help Ben and the others get through, and that's when a militia soldier named Mary agrees to let them through, leaving the commander to begrudgingly give the survivors thirty minutes.
Ben and Badgy both empty out Officer Doggy's backpack with all the necessary supplies and ingredients the research papers have told them to retrieve. The cure is finally prepared, and Ollie, now just mere moments from being infected, is administered the very first dose of it. Ollie can't remember anything since the temple, but Ben promises to fill him in on everything. The militia leader then shakes hands with Ben, stating that they'll need an army if they want to set out to cure everyone affected in both Lucella and Doveport. For Ben, that was good enough, and he finally asks everyone what they're waiting for.
